[Trans] 120511 EXO-K, they're having a concert in the US 2 months only after their debut?
The members of the rookie group EXO-K have a few common points. First they all started to dream of becoming singers since elementary school, secondly they all went through a trainee life until their debut; they all believed firmly that they could do it.
They were told they were going to be in one team EXO-K (Suho, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, D.O, Kai, Sehun), who all joined SM Entertainment as trainees. Chanyeol revealed “I was of course happy just at the fact I was going to debut but I was even happier I’d be in one team with them whom I was always close with” and “Our relationship is the kind that starting from our trainee days, even during our days off we would hang out together”.
‘MAMA’ revives the SMP… “It’s out of season? It’s rather refreshing”
You’re tied with the name ‘trainee’ but in a situation where you don’t know who’ll debut first, or without knowing if you’ll die out beforehand, you can’t avoid the competition. But EXO-K said “Rather than rivals, it was friends around the same age we were spending a lot of time with” and “We also felt like we were all attached to each other. It was a relationship where we were all releasing stress together in a family-like mood”.
With social lyrics, vocals like screams, the imposing sound that EXO-K’s debut song ‘MAMA’ lets us hear is typically the SMP (Reporter’s note-It’s the name of SM Entertainment’s unique Music Performance) style. They’re proud to show this SMP after a long time but the pressure is also big.

Having fired up their debut stages with their title track, “MAMA“, the members of EXO-K are ready to tone it down a notch in a casual new pictorial for ‘GQ‘ and ‘Vogue Girl‘ magazine!
Members Kai, Sehun, and Baekhyun were recently chosen to channel their youthful energy into vintage casual styles for the pictorial. Despite being in the midst of a busy debut schedule, the members were glad to be able to get away from the bustling city and pose against the serene backdrop of the countryside. More than anything, fans will surely be happy to see a bit of skin from the boys, as they daringly go topless for some of the shots.

SM Entertainment’s rookie group EXO-K are ‘full’ of seniors. As far as H.O.T and Shinhwa to DBSK, Super Junior, SHINee and even SNSD. The large number of famous names didn’t make things easier for EXO-K and it made them become practice maniacs; the experience EXO-K gained kept them growing.
During the pre-debut 100 days promotion, every time a teaser of the 12 people was released the expectations raised, even more so because they’re the first rookie group SM produces after 4 years.
“We’re the first rookies after a long time. Because our seniors established well the Hallyu and K-POP’s path, we were pressured about what we’ll do if our skills can’t match that. So we united more and worked harder.”(Chanyeol), “Because our seniors did well, we had to be successful too. So I think that we practiced even harder.”(Baekhyun)
Their seniors gave them a lot of advice for their debut. “When our debut stage ended, DBSK’s U-Know Yunho senior called us from Japan. Personally calling at dawn! He ended his concert in Japan and called us. And he gave us advice. We put the call on speaker phone and all the members listened attentively.”(Chanyeol)
“As for me, he told me that the song had a strong feeling but it would be good if I practiced charismatic expressions and gestures to overwhelm the audience, so of course I practiced hard. I was really touched.”(Chanyeol)
“Anyway, since we’re doing it live, our seniors have this know-how. He advised us to ‘Do the live while running’. He told us it was because the breathing was extremely important.”(D.O)
So junior EXO-K practiced according to their seniors’ advice. “After that, we ran during 1 hour everyday while singing in the company’s practice room. It had a huge effect.”(Sehun, D.O)
The SNSD unit, Taetiseo is currently promoting and they’re a reassuring support. “When we first appeared on ‘Music Core’, our seniors were MC-ing. We were totally nervous then, they came to greet us in our waiting room and they gave us a lot of encouragement. They said we were great and it gave us strength to go up on stage.”(Chanyeol)
The records the idols produced by SM made are at the level of a ‘4-dimension wall you can’t pass’. When telling about their seniors’ achievements to EXO-K who were opening their eyes widely, we asked them which one of these achievements they were the most envious of: Shinhwa not breaking up after 14 years, Super Junior being 1st overseas during 100 weeks, DBSK gathering 550,000 people in Japan for their concert.
They all said without any hesitation “All of these”. Baekhyun said “I’m personally very envious of Shinhwa seniors who stayed 14 years together”, as Chanyeol said this last sentence.
“We want to stay together for over 14 years like Shinhwa seniors, while being #1 overseas for 100 weeks like Super Junior seniors, and do a concert with more than 550,000 people in the audience like DBSK seniors. We will work hard. We will really do our best.”
If it’s these boys, it seems that this milestone can be reached.

EXO-K from SM who have produced a lot of idol stars are now taking powerful steps on the polished path their seniors have established. They’re also dreaming of reaching places that their seniors couldn’t pioneer to.
SM set a new record once again by making one group debut in Korea and China at the same time. They’re the first SM rookies after 4 years, attracting the attention of K-POP fans from all over the world through a 100 days online promotion before their debut. On April 8th 2012, EXO-K had their debut with ‘MAMA’ between eyes full of expectations and strict eyes ready to evaluate them.
But they met those expectations and got the top marks from those evaluations. ‘MAMA’ is a song that revives the SMP (SM Music Performance), the imposing orchestra sound is totally different from the standard pop. When watching the performance they show us on stage, it feels like we’re seeing a gemstone that’s going to surpass a lot of their seniors to become ‘another legend’.
Upon hearing the reporters say ‘You look even better in real life’ they didn’t know what to do with themselves and kept saying thank you, it’s been a month since they had their debut, which allowed them be known to the whole world, and it seems like they had a lot to say about it.

- How do you pronounce ‘Chanyeol’?
▲ (Chanyeol asked to the members “Call me once” while turning around, he asked to each of the members to call his name) It’s a bit ambiguous because my mother calls me ‘Chan-nyeol’ while my big sister calls me ‘Cha-nyeol’. You can pronounce it both ways but I think calling me ‘Chan-nyeol’ is better.
